Mustard Oil

Mustard oil is considered to be oil that has low saturated fat as compared to other cooking oils. Three different types of oil are made from mustard seed and may be referred to as “mustard oil.” The first is a fatty vegetable oil that comes from pressing the seeds. The second is called essential oil and is made by grinding the seeds, mixing them with water and extracting the oil through distillation. The third involves infusing mustard seed extract with other vegetable oils. Mustard seeds and leaves are edible parts of this plant. Mustard seeds are commonly used as spice. In some parts of India, leaves of mustard plant are used as vegetable.

Mustard oil has been used for centuries as a food additive, miracle cure-all and even an aphrodisiac. Digestive Health This oil is a very strong stimulant. It is very effective in stimulating excretion, circulation and digestion. Mustard oil stimulates digestion by stimulating the production of bile and gastric juices in liver and spleen. Even the excretory system is stimulated by mustard oil as the peristaltic movement of intestines is stimulated. Mustard acts as appetizer and boosts hunger, and considered as a digestive irritant. It irritates inner lining of stomach and intestine and simulates secretion of digestive juices giving a feeling of hunger.

Heart Health: Mustard essential oil is high in mono unsaturated fatty acids and good ratio of poly unsaturated fatty acids, which is considered good for heart and helps to balance cholesterol levels in the body. Improving your cholesterol balance will also help lower triglycerides, or blood fat levels, which can in turn prevent obesity, kidney disease, and hyperthyroidism, in addition to improving heart health.

Cancer Prevention: Mustard seeds contain ample amount of glucosinolate, a phytonutrient for body and other enzymes which studies have shown to have anti-cancer properties and effective on gastrointestinal and colorectal cancer.

Anti-Bacterial/Fungal: This oil has anti-fungal and bacterial properties. When consumed, mustard oil may fight bacterial infections inside the colon, intestines, urinary tract and other parts of the digestive system. Applied directly to the skin, mustard oil can help fight fungal infections.

Anti-Inflammatory: Mustard oil has been known to relieve the painful effects of rheumatism and arthritis as well as help soothe sprained ankles and other such joint aches and pains. Selenium present is considered essential nutrient for body and help to reduce severity of asthma, prevent cancer, and treat symptoms of arthritis.

Skin Health: Mustard oil is often applied externally, especially during massages. The oil has high levels of vitamin E, which helps improve skin health. It can help protect the skin against free radicals from ultraviolet light and pollution, and can even help reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles.
